2021 Kitchen trends in cabinets and counters

Renos are still going strong, especially as the pandemic lingers and we continue to spend more time at home, and one of the top renos on homeowners lists is the kitchen, of course! The kitchen is the heart of the home and needs to be highly functional for the whole family to gather in. Traditionally, the most expensive ticket items for kitchen renos are the cabinets and countertops.

Here are the top trends in 2021 for kitchen cabinet styles, hardware and countertops:

  1. Cabinet styles – Shaker-style cabinets remain popular, as they are simple and classic looking. Contemporary styles have straight lines and are minimalist. For example, this style has flat fronts with no knobs or pull, and the trending finish is matte. A rustic design in kitchen cabinets is characterized by warm wood, and it has been around for a long time and is especially popular in cottages.

Overall, colour trends for cabinets remain white or with a lighter colour like blue or green. Two-toned cabinets also remain extremely popular.

  1. Cabinet hardware – Nickel hardware has been around for decades, but now copper fixtures are trending. Copper will work with the right cabinet style, especially if it is darker, like emerald green or black. If the kitchen style is eclectic, bold cabinet hardware in patterns or bright colours will complete the look and feel of the cabinets. You can find a large array of hardware options on Richelieu's website: https://www.richelieu.com/ca/en/

  1. Counters – Keep in mind when suggesting a counter top style how durable it needs to be for the homeowner's lifestyle. It's great if it looks good, but it also may need to be stain resistant or low maintenance. Quartz is still reining as the number one kitchen countertop choice among homeowners. The non-porous kitchen countertop material is resistant against bacteria, stains, heat, and scratches and is low maintenance. Some other popular trends are butcher block counters, contemporary concrete, and waterfall islands.
